Peter, I forgot to mention. As of 06:45 PST on January 4th, WN had 144 flight cancels or 3% and 1015 flight delays or 25% of their scheduled flights. They still can’t get back to reliable ops.

Peter, thanks for your comment. WN has had IT meltdowns before severely impacting operations going back to 2014. This wasn’t their first rodeo. Yes, the SkySolver system can only handle a handful of cancellations before it bogs down to a halt. The pilots union for years has been urging WN to replace SkySolver with an application that really works. Their fleet has doubled since SkySolver was implemented. It is so bad that they lose track of aircraft positioning, pilots and fly attendants. All airlines had to deal with weather. WN had to deal with weather and an IT meltdown. That’s what really happened. Thanks for reading.

They need to appropriate millions of dollars to fund a SkySolver replacement project. Once they can budget for the project, you can expect that project to take up to two years to fully develop, test, bug fix, rollout and train users. This won’t happen overnight. Thanks for reading.

Southwest flies thru the same weather impacting flights as ALL airlines. All airlines experience irregular operations. All airlines operate under Federal Air Regulations (FAR), specifically as it pertains to crew rest. As for an outdated computer system, how strange this event never occurred in the past. As for lack of an interline agreement. Even with such an agreement in place it would be highly unlikely capacity would be available due robust holiday travel. Any excess capacity would be used
to shore up individual airline delays and cancellations. I believe what happened to WN has nothing to do with what this article highlighted, rather something unsaid.

Will they replace SkySolver?

DaninMCI, they do not have a pilot/flight attendant base in Hawaii. All of those crews come from the mainland and a lot of inter-island flying is tag legs before/after the trip over, or they are scheduled to operate into Hawaii, fly around for 1-2 days, operate back out to California. It isn’t isolated. Also, a fair deal of ground staff is in Hawaii on temporary assignment from other stations (less than it has been in the last few years) because they’ve had issues staffing those positions. Evidence is some of the ridiculously long waits, in comparison for checked bags at some island airports.

They have a remote island workforce, could operate without computers if needed, they have a separate fleet basically.
