Sorry, there aren’t any tricks so I’m not sure how I can help.

I suggest you try to follow along with the examples I give above. That’s one reason I took so many screenshots. Try doing the multi-city award to Asia. I can tell you that your Explorer card won’t provide you any extra award space on partner flights.

I think you’re mistaken. Several times while researching this post I performed searches for award travel and didn’t actually have enough miles for those tickets. After making the final selection, I was asked to log in and got a warning that there weren’t enough miles in my account. However, I had no trouble finding award space, and the correct price was displayed.

Is there a work around or do I have to do a point to point search? No reason to transfer points into your account until you find space.

Yes. That fee would range from $0 to $100 depending on your status. But if it means you can lock in a business class international award, which is probably more important, then I consider the fee worth paying.
