Is that correct? My husband and I are both MVP gold. Also, does the companion ticket need to be used within a year of the purchase date? Thank you.

Last summer (before we canceled the trip) I was looking into splitting up an existing JetBlue reservation. My sister and brother in law wanted to keep my daughter for an extra week or two, then fly with her back to our home, and visit my brother in law’s father who lives near me. Anyways long story short (too late) JetBlue advised me to call up and tell them the situation and they would make it happen without charging an unaccompanied minor fee.

I’m glad you found a solution, Steve. So far I haven’t had this particular issue. I imagine that if the website didn’t make it possible to link the adult’s reservation online that you could still call Alaska and get help redeeming your code by phone.

My wife and kids travel together and I don’t want to pay the unaccompanied minor fee for the second kid just because this companion fare requires us to split the reservation.
EDIT:
I trialed going through the reservation process, and got this message:
“Children under the age of 13 on Alaska Airlines flights must be linked to an adult reservation. Please book the adult reservation first and have the confirmation code available to enter on the Traveler Information page.”
So I guess that’s how you can do it.

Hi Scott, first time traveler with Alaska Airlines, looking for some clarification, according to this question, I can not purchase my ticket with miles AND use a companion fare, BUT according to a question posted last year, you do not need to be the traveler (just the purchaser to redeem a companion fare) Husband, self and daughter traveling round trip from SD to Sitka but daughter returning early. Can I purchase her ticket with the companion fare code and under completely separate reservation use miles for mine and husbands round trip reservation?

Premium class can be booked during the booking process. It’s a preferred seating option, not a separate ticket class.

Select a main cabin fare and proceed through the booking process until you reach seat assignments. Depending on the fare class and your elite status, you may be able to select a premium class seat for free. Otherwise, it will have a charge. I’ve seen recent prices of $39 per person but I believe it depends on the route.

My question is can I book premium class seats in the main cabin at the time of booking with the companion fare? I’ve heard lots of talk about how to upgrade to first class but that is probably more then my party is interested in, we just have several folks that need the extra leg room that premium seats offer.

You can’t get the miles back.

Thank you for your prompt response. I am the primary passenger, on MY companion ticket. So now the next question . . . we have upgraded to first class using miles. Is it possible to reclaim my husband’s miles w/o losing my ticket/upgrade? I know when hubby doesn’t check in, they’ll give his first class seat to someone on the waitlist. I assume that after the flight takes off, the I can’t reclaim the miles? Thoughts on how to get the most out of this? Again, thanks in advance.

It depends on who is booked as the primary passenger and who is the companion. You can see this on your receipt. The fare is displayed for each individual passenger. The companion paid only $99.

The companion can only fly in the presence of the primary passenger. If your husband is the companion, he can skip the return flight and book his own trip home. If you are the companion, then you will both need new tickets home because you cannot use your current ticket with him.

Due to business, my husband needs to come home 5 days after our current return is planned. What happens if he just doesn’t check in? We are willing to buy a one way ticket home for him. Consequences? TIA

Who told you that? If you booked by phone the agent was likely misinformed. The FAQ page on Alaska’s website and the T&Cs that I’ve read are pretty clear you can either be a passenger or book travel for someone else. I suggest talking to a different agent or just booking online.

Fees start at $22. Some flights have higher fees, and all of those fees are passed on when you book.

I was told that I had to be ticketed along with my companion to use the companion fare. I was buying tickets for my daughter and granddaughter to fly roundtrip for SEA to SD and was told I had to be on the flight with one of them. It wasn’t good enough that I was buying the ticket.

And as of 10/19 the companion fare now has $36 in fees instead of the $22.
