I figured this out. The popup only appears if you specify the duration of stay on the initial search as a *range*. So entering “5-8” will display the popup. Entering just “5” will never display a popup. That might argue for making your initial searches have a 7 day range by default.

I just tried it in incognito mode as well, and it is also not working there. So it is not a Google Chrome Extension at work. You are just playing the cursor over the price?

I’m not sure why you’re facing that difficulty. I just tried it and the feature still works fine.

In the Chrome browser, when I hover over a date in the calendar view, there is no popup to let me see impact on price if I extend the trip period. Do I need to enable some feature in Chrome security for the website?

R is an award fare class. ITA only shows fare classes that are available for sale.

ExpertFlyer is another service that provides a breakdown of inventory in multiple fare classes at once. However, it doesn’t work for all airlines, and it does not always show award inventory.

Is there any way to get the airline booking codes with the number of seats available per flight usign ITA? For example I often want to know if there are R seats available and I will sometimes pick my flight based on being able to upgrade immediately using GPUs – but I have to go to united airlines and look at every leg every time to find this info…would be nice if ITA showed it as it is very slow doing this on UA site.

I found these two links as helpful, and answered most of my questions. Thanks.

I am a frequent United traveler, and havent ever seen it on the fare buckets in “Expert Mode”. Is it only on certain routes? Please feel free to route me another post if you have already written about it.

Y-UP fares don’t follow the normal upgrade rules associated with a loyalty program. It’s a feature of the fare itself. But they’re not always easy to find.

I still need to know the dates of travel. Please provide a screenshot of your itinerary using the image box (below the comment) or send an email to scott@travelcodex.com.

great post, been an ITA fan for a long time!

Together with a couple more guys we’ve been working for over a year now on a new tool for frequent flyers: instead of flown mileage we are displaying accruable miles based on the FFP the traveler has. We’re still in closed beta but would love to share access and pick your brains on what we’re doing.

Sorry, but I’m not familiar with using them for flights outside the U.S.

We do a lot of travel outside of the USA. I see Delta and UA have ‘up’ fares, Air Europa has ‘pro’ fares. Is there a master list of codes that ‘generally’ refer to upgrade fares when in combination with fare codes?
Is there a good way to find upgrade fares for travel originating outside the USA?

You can use ExpertFlyer to search published fares and specific the individual fare classes that are eligible as UP fares. Usually the “UP” part is included in the fare basis code. See the example below with YUAUP3 (Y-UP fare on United Airlines) for a SEA-IAH flight.
