Hi Penny.. No companion flight anymore ..went years ago, what you get now as regard flights is the Platinum Reserve Card [ companion card]. which gives you 1 free flight from Melbourne to all capital cites + New Zealand per year…but they are cutting that out this year & giving a $400 AUD credit, we also get slugged 3% overseas conversion costs
So up go the cost of the card…and down come the benefits .

Do you still get the companion free for that price? What other extras do you get?

So far it hasn’t changed but even if it does I can get $100 annual savings thanks to the investment I have with them

Well Mark…that’s a good question, I’ve had the card since 1997 when it first started down here, was $900.00 AUD & by invitation only, fly 1st class & companion was free & so on so on with added extras..no problems justifying that, but now $1200 AUD & I still have it…so to answer your question…. the market & much smaller value. Cheers Gazza.

Just curious why you would pay that much for a credit card? Not judging just curious if the market demands that or if there is value there.

I already have the Chase Reserve and the Citi Prestige. I’ve been wanting an excuse to get the Platinum for access to the Centurion lounges – but it has to make financial sense. Then I read the new benefits and was disappointed.

Most of the new benefits are useless to me – prepaid hotel rooms only? No thank you. Travel is way to unpredictable. Gold cards that earn points but otherwise offer no additional benefits? My wife doesn’t spend much at all on Amex bonused categories. The Freedom and Reserve as an authorized user is a better choice for her. The improved Priority Pass bene is nice, but I already have that through the Prestige.

The Uber credit alone would easily be worth the extra $100 – if the credit didn’t expire in a month! I spend about $600 a year with Uber and Lyft but my pattern is: every day for a week at a time, about every other month. At best, then, I’d get $90 a year (better if one of the weeks was in December) – a net loss of $10. But that’s only if my 6 weeks a year average never comes more than once per month. Most likely, I won’t get $90 out of it. Then I thought about the 3x UR points I’d be giving up by not using the Reserve. Yeah, the Uber credit, seemingly great at first glance, is actually a $0 value to me.

I still want unlimited access to the best lounges in the U.S. – but maybe not this year. I’ll wait until my Reserve annual fee comes due and re-evaluate then which card makes the most sense for me. Hey, maybe Citi will up the stakes on the Prestige before then and I can go exclusively with them. Meh, still wouldn’t include the Centurion lounge. Oh well.

My heart bleeds for you blokes….we are paying $1200.00 AUD down-under.. not really complaining… just letting you know what life is like outside your bubble.

The Uber thing is fine, I guess. I probably use Uber enough to get most of this credit. But, it wont’ be all months. The Amex travel code is a real PIA in my opinion though I do the hoops to get it. Honestly the 5x airfare is the only real value I get out of the card outside of the lounges. Are the lounges worth THAT much money? I have about 6 more months before renewal to decide.

Fair enough, I’ll reword it.

If it expires after the month it’s a monthly credit!

The card will continue to be a non-starter in my book until they liberalize that to match what Citi and Chase are doing.

I said that the fee is decreasing by $100 net. That means it’s decreasing by $100 from wherever it was before.
