Comments on: Chase Sapphire Reserve Launches with 100K Bonus …but No Flight Discounts https://www.travelcodex.com/chase-sapphire-reserve-100k-bonus/ Your Resource for Better Travel Wed, 13 Dec 2017 00:21:10 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.2 By: tassojunior https://www.travelcodex.com/chase-sapphire-reserve-100k-bonus/#comment-506740 Wed, 17 Aug 2016 21:43:00 +0000 https://www.travelcodex.com/?p=27150#comment-506740 I assume this new card is subject to the 5/24 rule.

It’s better to get a Ritz promo with points (140K before) and combine them with Marriott 85K bonuses to get to the 250K level for hotel/air paks. 1 week at a hotel plus 120K Southwest points plus a Companion Pass on Southwest for up to 2 years….the churners’ trifecta.

I went with the Hyatt this week—not subject to 5/24, no 1st year fee, 2 free nights after $1K spend, and $50 credit. Much better deal than the Ritz 3 nites/$5K spend/ $450 annual fee for similar quality.

It’s possible to have both cards, but it doesn’t make sense to. I assume you’ll cancel the Chase Sapphire Preferred after the new Reserve card is approved. You can transfer the points between accounts to save them.

Thanks for the follow-up. So would that be just going through the regular application process? One could theoretically have both cards (even if it doesn’t make much sense to)?

I have new information from a reliable source that current Sapphire Preferred cardholders who apply for an upgrade may be approved, but they won’t get a new bonus. If you want the bonus you should apply for the Sapphire Reserve card separately as a new account.

You should transfer the points before closing the account. Each card maintains its own balance of Ultimate Rewards points, but you can move them between accounts.

Thanks, Scott! I’m assuming also that canceling my CSP when the next annual fee comes due will have no adverse impact on the Ultimate Rewards in my account because they will all be accessible using my new CSR card. Is this correct, too? I certainly don’t want to make a misstep here.

Correct. I’ll fix my comment.

I thought it was $27/guest if they’re not either allowed in free (Citi Prestige) or if they are an authorized user (on some cards). Am I mistaken?

That hasn’t been revealed.

Guests are normally allowed with all Priority Pass memberships. The question is if you’ll have to pay $19 or if they’re complimentary.

It would not make sense to keep both cards, no.

I currently have CSP and a Freedom card. If I apply and get approved for the CSR, wouldn’t it make sense to cancel the CSP when its annual fee becomes due? Doesn’t the CSR have include all the CSP’s benefits (and more) for an annual fee of $150 (net after the airfare reimbursement) vs. $95 (after year 1)?

That’s my opinion, as well. The Crystal is difficult.

I’d do it after. If there are any issues with your credit line, you can call for reconsideration and ask Chase to move existing credit from another card. Then either keep that other card open with a lower credit line or close it after the Reserve is approved.

I agree with the Crystal may be better for the reason you stated, however, it is a PIA to apply for it where the CSR is widely available to all who qualify.

I was thinking of closing one of the personal cards. Would you recommend doing that before or after I apply.

You get first year free, plus $250 airline credit per user, plus 12 GoGo per AU and $100 airline credit for 2 to five tickets.

The status doesn’t really help you, but it sounds like you’re a frequent Marriott guest so maybe the upgrades and the 5X points on paid stays will be handy.
