I almost had to do that flight, then we canceled last minuet when we took a look at it. My Father flew it though, he just had two words “never again”

Then, for a while, it was not horrible, when it was 3-3-, and the footprint of the entertainment system had shrunk to be almost negligible. But now the 777 has returned to its dishonorable roots with 3-4-3, where the space of the 10th seat seems to come from replacing the armrests with razor blades. And on United’s 777-200, a mysterious grey box has appeared to take up 1/4 to 1/3 of the foot space under every other seat.

It was just too good for a while, and they had to put an end to our undeserved comfort.

United makes me hate travel, and now I will avoid it at all costs.

Agreed. I did the 10 across on a full flight from SFO-LHR in Economy Plus and it was noticeably more miserable. I was sitting on an aisle and next to a woman with the frame of a teenage girl and we couldn’t stop bumping and jockeying for space the entire flight. Status or not, I’m flying the Delta route if I can’t avoid the 10x from now on. I fly a lot of Economy long haul and I think I would lose my mind in the middle of two adults back in regular Economy.

As if Boeing’s questionable noise reduction and the draughty aircon wasn’t bad enough (seriously Boeing, how hard can it be?!), the 777 is about as claustrophobia-inducing as it gets. I mean, the 747-8 is far from great but the 777 takes the cake.

I have to presume you are asking about the 777-300ER, since that is the only 777 with that particular situation. Unfortunately, no, those seats do not have extra legroom. They are standard 31″ Economy seating.

They are listed as economy, but the outside seats in those rows are listed as economy plus.

Sitting 10-across in Economy Class is surprisingly tolerable – when UA is providing free seats to shill their new aircraft. Title is extremely misleading.

Speak for yourself. And no, the 10 abreast seats are narrower than seats on a 737 AND United has removed lavatories even though there are more people AND there is no additional overhead space to accommodate bags for all those people AND the 777 has four seats in every row that are “middle” seats compared to only two on the 737 AND the 777 flies routes that are considerably longer than the 737, making for a much more miserable experience that really is that bad. Apples to oranges.

It’s a much different story than what you describe in economy plus. We’re getting less and paying more so those up front can have much more. How American of United.

It was completely sold-out and completely horrible. I’ll won’t do it again without a gun to my head. Narrow seats, narrow aisles, full overhead bins, shoulders touching and long lines for the lavatories. Basically it was 15 hours of “no way I ever do this again”. Be warned. The cabin crew didn’t seem to dig the situation either, I’ll clue ya.

On the other hand; I’ve had mostly good experiences flying in the 9-abreast United 777-200 (economy plus) cabin. So, the business class cabin gets a nice new upgrade with Polaris and the rest of the plane gets the shaft.

I was on a 10 abreast United 777 from SFO-ORD a couple months ago. I was in the window seat in Economy Plus and there was a moderately large gentleman sitting next to me, and it was by far the most uncomfortable flight I’ve ever been on. To his credit, the guy sitting next to me tried to shrink himself as much as possible into the limited footprint of his seat, but as much as he tried his elbows kept jabbing me. By the time we were approaching SFO I felt airsick and claustrophobic and wanted nothing more than for the flight to end right then.

Also, the new seats have a flaw where the call button is on top of the armrest. So a lot of passengers were inadvertently pushing the call button repeatedly. Let’s just say the constant dings ringing through the cabin throughout the flight was not soothing.

I cannot imagine ever flying 10 abreast for an actually long flight, like 7+ hours like ORD-HNL.

It’s not ideal, but it really isn’t **that** bad, even on a 100% full aircraft. (I’ve flown 10-abreast 777 with ANA, Aeroflot, and Air New Zealand now.) The aisles, esp. on NZ, are very narrow.

The 747 did/does have 10 abreast, but the 747 cabin interior is 9.5 inches wider than the 777, so it is somewhat less of a squeeze.

The original 747 had 17 inch wide seats at 10 abreast so at 17.1 inches on a 777 you’re still winning.

I didn’t know Cathay wanted that configuration previously. Unfortunately, soon they are joining the competition on 10 across as well: http://m.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/economy/article/2024306/tight-squeeze-hong-kongs-cathay-pacific-introduce-10-abreast

I like window seats normally, but in a configuration like this, there is no shoulder space there. At least an aisle seat allows for leaning out.
I’m bigger than you and keep in mind the 3-4-3 in a 777 has even narrower seats than 3-3-3 on 787. Yuck!

I tried to make clear in my post that my situation was not what most people can expect to experience in this seat.
