As far as upgrades, I’ve rarely had a problem with other programs, unless the hotel is packed. Some cash under the table can sort out a lot of problems.

Like recently I was setting up a 4-night stay at Park Hyatt Vendome. EXACTLY the kind of place you’d want to use that certificate right? Not so much. When I setup the booking with cert for 1 night and the other nights on points, and tried to use a suite upgrade things got complicated. The hotel wouldn’t apply the suite upgrade to the certificate night. They offered to charge me a fee for the upgrade instead. I needed a guaranteed suite since travelling with spouse plus 2 small children. Eventually I just backed up and did it all points. With the certs you tend to want to MAXIMIZE CATEGORY and it always limits your thinking.

When we arrived at Vendome, someone forgot to paste in the notes about the kids, and so we could accomodate all 4 they apologetically upgraded us from a Junior Suite to an Executive Suite. Those run about 1400 Euros a night. WIN!
