Comments on: Should I Sleep or Stay Awake on My Next Flight? https://www.travelcodex.com/sleep-or-awake-flight/ Your Resource for Better Travel Wed, 07 Feb 2018 13:22:00 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.2 By: Lee Huffman https://www.travelcodex.com/sleep-or-awake-flight/#comment-526686 Wed, 07 Feb 2018 13:22:00 +0000 https://travelcodex.com/?p=172651#comment-526686 This is a tough question, especially when you’re flying in Business or First Class. You want to experience everything there is on the flight, but you also want to be refreshed when you arrive at your destination. I’ll do some reading and maybe watch a movie, then take a nap for about half of the flight length. That way I can enjoy the food, drinks, and service, but still be ready to explore my destination.

Absolutely – I’m willing to pay usually $100 or more to avoid these flights, absolute day wreckers.

I think it depends on when you land since there are typically two groups of departures from the West Coast – if you land in the afternoon/evening, stay up during the flight. If you arrive in the morning, then sleep on the flight. Many flights to Southeast Asia are thankfully 6+ hours and few timezones off from the northeast asian gateway cities, so you could try to get some shuteye then.

The worst case scenario is that I have a connection in Asia. I remember taking a flight from Seoul to Siem Reap, and I was so tired at that point (after a morning departure from LAX) that I fell asleep as soon as I buckled my seat belt. With no one else in business class, the flight attendant was disappointed she had no one to serve.

Some flights from India to SE Asia follow similar schedules. You might get 2 hours of sleep if you’re lucky. Those are brutal no matter how you slice it.
